Mullets Rock! Too! Mullets in Love

Various Artists

Not that I would describe my ‘do’ as a mullet, but I am pretty damn close with the late 70s hair cut I have been sporting since…well, the late 70s. So, it’s a no-brainer that I love the new Mullets Rock! Too! Mullets in Love. Separated by Psyched! and Bummed! — though all on one CD — the 18 songs range from artists like Ted Nugent to Jefferson Starship, Aldo Nova to Bonnie Tyler, and Kansas to Cinderella...and pretty much anybody else you could think of that might fit in with this loose concept collection.

Opening with the rousing Nugent classic “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang,” the Psyched! portion of the CD consists of hot rockin' stand-outs from long ago. With the exception of Ace Frehley’s “Do Ya,” the first ten tracks were all big hits in their day, and in some cases, like Aldo Nova’s “Fantasy,” the only hit for a particular artist. I’m not sure if all the songs here stay within the boundaries of ‘psyched’ (or even what that’s supposed to mean), but any time I can hear Foghat’s “I Just Want To Make Love To You” and “Love Stinks” by the J. Geils Band all on one CD — within five songs of each other — I’m happy.

Of the remaining tracks comprise the Bummed! portion of the CD. Songs to get bummed out over include “Love Hurts” by Nazareth, an overlooked 70s workhorse of a band if ever there was one, in my opinion; Cheap Trick’s ultra-wimpy “The Flame”; and that overly infectious “Sister Christian” by Night Ranger (didn’t Jack Blades from Night Ranger go on to form Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent?...now there's six degrees of separation for ya!). “Dust In The Wind” doesn’t strike me as a love song, psyched, bummed, refried or otherwise, but that’s where it ends up. Mullets Rock! Too! Mullets In Love is a fun compilation for those of us who: a) might not own some of these tunes; b) Or may not be big fans of the bands represented. But there’s certainly enough for fans of hits, no matter who recorded them.
